Fall Into Film: The JBFC Announces Autumn 2024 Lineup

A film noir celebration with a murder mystery dinner, the annual 12-Hour Halloween Movie Marathon, new releases including Anora, We Live in Time, A Real Pain, and Blitz, along with fan favorite series such as After Hours, Beyond the Frame, and JBFC Kids are among major programs coming this fall.

 

Pleasantville, NY – October 8, 2024 – The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) announced today a variety of unique, one-of-a-kind events, series, and screenings for fall 2024. With Take 3 Wine Bar & Café, the fun continues upstairs after a day (or night) out at the movies! This autumn is jam-packed with much awaited new releases, beloved repertory series, special events, and thought-provoking Q&As featuring filmmakers, authors, and more.
Highly Anticipated New Releases Include:

  • October 11 (Tickets on sale): Saturday Night
    Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Gil Kenan & Reitman, Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live.
  • October 11: We Live in Time
    Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken in this decades-spanning, deeply moving romance.
  • October 25: Conclave
    Conclave follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events—selecting the new Pope. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, this high-stakes drama comes from All Quiet on the Western Front director, Edward Berger.
  • November 1: Anora
    Winner of the 2024 Palme D’Or at Cannes! Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.
  • November 1: Emilia Pérez
    Four remarkable women pursue happiness in Jacques Audiard’s audacious, genre-defying film that unfolds through a fever dream of original songs and dance. Winner of two Cannes awards and starring Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez.
  • November 8: A Real Pain
    Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
  • November 8: Blitz
    Steve McQueen’s latest starring Saoirse Ronan is set in World War II London, where nine-year-old George is evacuated to the countryside by his mother, Rita, to escape the bombings. Defiant and determined to return to his family, George embarks on an epic, perilous journey back home as Rita searches for him.
  • November 22: Wicked
    After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.

Coming to our Screens in December:

  • Nightbitch: A woman (Amy Adams) pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her domesticity takes a surreal turn.
  • Queer: Luca Guadagnino’s latest starts Daniel Craig amidst a group of gay American expatriates in 1940s Mexico City.
  • The Return: Odysseus washes up on the shores of his kingdom to find it much changed since he left to fight in the Trojan War, in this classical drama starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.
  • A Complete Unknown: Follows 19-year-old Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) rise to fame in the early ’60s New York music scene.
  • Babygirl: A high-powered CEO (Nicole Kidman) puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern (Harris Dickinson).

 

Special Events and Limited Engagements Include:

  • Monday, Oct. 21 at 7:00: Screening of Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation followed by a Q&A with Rolling Stone Journalist David Browne, moderated by JBFC Board President Janet Maslin
    In celebration of David Browne’s latest book, Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, the JBFC is screening the documentary Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation. Featuring poignant interviews with Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Don McLean, Arlo Guthrie, Lucy and Carly Simon, and Judy Collins, among dozens of other music luminaries, it combines talking heads with rare archival footage and new live performances to tell a story about a community that created a generation-defining music.

  • Saturday, Oct. 26 at 9:00: 12-Hour Halloween Movie Marathon
    Bring your best blood-curdling screams to the return of Jacob Burns Film Center’s 12-hour horror movie marathon. Stay up all night for seven spine-tingling films including John Carpenter’s The Thing on 35mm, Joe Dante’s Piranha, and a 35mm 3D print of Creature from the Black Lagoon, to name a few. A pre-marathon get-together at Take 3 Wine Bar & Café starts at 7:30, followed by a costume contest with prizes and goodies.

  • Monday, Nov. 11 at 7:00: Preview screening of Elton John: Never Too Late, followed by a conversation with director R.J. Cutler and co-director/Elton John’s Husband David Furnish
    The documentary follows Elton John as he looks back on his life and the astonishing early days of his 50-year career in this emotionally charged, intimate and uplifting full-circle journey. As he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium, Elton takes us back in time and recounts the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse and addiction to become the icon he is today.

  • Friday, Nov. 15 at 6:00: Friday @ The Burns
    The JBFC and Hudson Roots are hosting a family-friendly evening where parents can socialize and enjoy a meal by Daniel Bartush from Friends Of Friends, along with beer and coffee from Here Coffee & Beer. Meanwhile, kids will watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, enjoy pizza, and a movie pack with popcorn, candy, and a drink. The night wraps up with everyone enjoying ice cream from Penny Lick Ice Cream. Registrations close on Nov. 13.

  • Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6:00: Murder Mystery Dinner
    The culminating event of the JBFC’s Noirvember series is an interactive “Who Dun It” Murder Mystery Dinner Party, offering a night of intrigue and suspense. Guests are encouraged to dress in noir-inspired attire, with prizes awarded for best costume, best guess, worst guess, and more. The evening will feature twists, turns, and surprises, inviting everyone to channel their inner detective for a thrilling experience. All proceeds will benefit the Jacob Burns Film Center’s film and education programs.

Education:

The JBFC educates students in grades 3-12 in visual literacy through a range of school, public, and fellowship programs, reaching over 5,000 students annually from Westchester and beyond at its Theater and Media Arts Lab. More than 70% of school participants attend at no cost, with busing provided based on need. The JBFC also offers filmmaking courses for adults: registrations are now open for the Video Production Bootcamp (10/26–10/27) and Freelance Video Workshop (11/16). Both courses are led by NYU Adjunct Instructor, Author, and Filmmaker Anthony Q. Artis, and will include hands-on training.
*Registrations for Summer Camp 2025 will open in January.
