Robert Altman at 100

Aug. 9–Sep. 27, 2025

Celebrating the maverick American filmmaker a century after his birth, the JBFC showcases the best of Robert Altman. From counter-cultural touchstones like M*A*S*H to serrated late-career satires such as The Player and Short Cuts, the series explores an idiosyncratic master who was guided by a truly independent spirit. Altman pioneered the use of overlapping dialogue, employing numerous microphones to allow for realistic and polyrhythmic conversation, which suited stories that were freely adaptive to some of the most colorful and unpredictable characters ever featured on cinema screens. “How could one person be responsible for so many good films?” once asked Paul Thomas Anderson. “Add to that, how could one person be responsible for so many truly great films?”

The series includes M*A*S*H (1970), The Long Goodbye (1973), California Split (1974), Nashville (1975), The Player (1992), and Short Cuts (1993).
