CAROL! CAROL! CAROL!

By Abby Popper, JBFC Public Relations

Yes, I am shouting it out to tell you that you must see Carol. I was lucky enough to attend a preview screening last week here at the JBFC. In a nutshell, this is one of the most lush, gorgeous (in every aspect, cinematography, costuming, set designs) films I have seen in a long time. And, if you are my age (no, I am not telling), you will recall your youth and your parent’s era–the toys, the cars, the clothes. Carol is Todd Haynes latest film (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, Velvet Goldmine, Safe) and probably his finest. The marvelous Cate Blanchett plays Carol and Rooney Mara her love interest. (By the way, Mara was born and raised in Bedford and graduated from Fox Lane High School in 2003!) Both actresses should be nominated for an Academy Award.

This 1950s romance, adapted from the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt, dominated the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, taking the award for best film as well as best director for Haynes, best screenplay for Phyllis Nagy (who visited the Burns on December 1), and best cinematography for Edward Lachman.
“The beauty of Carol isn’t in the composition of the shots, nor in the performances of stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It’s in the simplicity of its voice. The movie finds love in the quietest moments: the slightest touch of hands, the laugh that lasts a beat longer than it should. And capturing those fleeting images is nothing if not its director’s life’s work.” (WIRED)

The film will open at the Burns this Friday, December 11 as a Westchester Exclusive. Tickets are on sale now!
