Carol

From director Todd Haynes (May December, Far from Heaven), this stunning, immaculately crafted adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal queer novel The Price of Salt stands as one of the great romance films of the 21st century. Beautifully shot on 35mm by legendary cinematographer Edward Lachman, Carol features Academy Award nominated performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, the latter of whom received the award for Best Actress at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. When aspiring photographer Therese Belivet (Mara) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol Aird (Blanchett) perusing the doll display in a 1950s Manhattan department store, the two women quickly strike up a passionate love affair. When Carol’s husband (Kyle Chandler) uncovers her involvement with Therese, the two lovers hit the road, attempting to leave their respective lives behind.

Presented alongside Out There: Pride.

"Never has the impossible glamour of Cate Blanchett been used to better effect than in Todd Hayne's ravishing and romantic Carol."
Max Weiss, Baltimore Magazine
"Carol is gorgeous, gently groundbreaking, and might be the saddest thing you’ll ever see. More than hugely accomplished cinema, it’s an exquisite work of American art, rippling with a very specific mid-century melancholy, understanding love as the riskiest but most necessary gamble in anyone’s experience."
Tim Robey, The Telegraph

This film is part of the The New Classics series.
