To celebrate Chuck Berry’s 60th birthday, the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards asked Robert Cray, Eric Clapton, and longtime Berry pianist Johnnie Johnson—along with Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, Julian Lennon, and others—to join them onstage in two unforgettable concerts. Berry performs his classic songs (“Maybellene,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Roll Over Beethoven”) and surprises us with some unforgettable offstage moments (confessing that he took up music full-time purely because it was more lucrative than housepainting, for example) in this infectious look back. When Berry died earlier this year, filmmaker Taylor Hackford said he was “the greatest creative force in the birth of rock & roll—that’s a fact.” There’s ample proof of that in this portrait of a master.
