Revisit Classic Hollywood with Retro Revival

By JBFC Marketing Volunteer Dotty Battel

As most of you know, we show remastered and/or rereleased versions of film classics each month in our Retro Revival series.

Now that Christmas is almost here, it seems like the perfect time to let you know about the fantastic films that we will be screening this winter. We look forward to the joy of rediscovering them together.

It’s a Wonderful Life
Dec. 21 -25

Destined to live forever, this 1946 holiday classic is coming back to the Burns by popular demand.  This story is basically a gripping and beautifully told morality tale about the meaning of life, and virtue being its own reward. And who among us can resist that great everyman hero George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart). And of course, let’s not forget that it’s also about how angels get their wings.

Some Like it Hot
Jan. 29

Still red hot, Billy Wilder’s 1959 screen classic is another one of those film treasures, “joyous and buoyant….a perfect American comedy.” (The Guardian) Set in Chicago during the 20s, this hilarious romp about two down-and-out musicians fleeing from the mob by disguising themselves as women stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, all at the top of their game, plus a strong supporting cast. Here are some fun facts that you probably didn’t know about this amazing film that continues to crack up audiences today:

Roman Holiday
Feb. 14

What could be better viewing on Valentine’s Day than this modern-day fairy tale?  “Roman Holiday is as funny as it is beautiful, and sets the standard for the modern romantic comedy.” (Rotten Tomatoes). The sublime Audrey Hepburn won an Oscar for her role as an incognito princess who falls in love with a reporter (Gregory Peck) while visiting the Eternal City. And did you know that blacklisted Dalton Trumbo wrote the Academy Award winning screenplay?  It was awarded at the time to Ian McLellan Hunter who fronted for him, but was finally credited to Trumbo in 1992.

Don’t miss out on the chance to re-experience (or see for the first time) these marvelous classics in their glorious remastered or restored version–they are breathtaking!
