The Wedding Day

A few days before his daughter’s lavish wedding, Polish businessman Rysiek finds two Israeli men delivering a Righteous Among the Nations medal to his elderly father. Unnerved by what that reveals about his family’s hidden past, Rysiek tries to keep it quiet—but the medal awakens memories for his father, who confuses his granddaughter’s big day with a very different wedding that occurred in the same place back in 1941. At a time when the Polish government continues to suppress public discussion of Polish crimes against Jews during the Nazi occupation, Wojciech Smarzowski’s controversial new film is especially provocative and brave.

“A masterful and provocative high-wire act...of intense social relevance. Filmmaker Wojciech Smarzowski makes a spectacle out of a confrontational revisiting of the national collective memory in an unorthodox approach to a Holocaust movie.”
Martin Kudlac, Screen Anarchy
“Unusually strong and emotive...The Wedding Day exposes unpalatable events and themes in Poland’s history that some Poles would rather bury and forget. Wojciech Smarzowski courageously resurrects them in a hard-hitting, warts-and-all film that respects the bitter truth.”
The Times of Israel
