Monica Castillo, JBFC Senior Programmer writes: “With a stacked cast of Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist and Michael Shannon, Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders brings a midcentury motorcycle club roaring back to the big screen and doubles as a study of this chapter of American counterculture set among midwestern highways, revving engines and matching leather jackets. It has its serious moments of danger (hello, it’s a motorcycle gang) but it also has its moments of fun and comradery, especially in the close but emotionally restrained dynamic between Hardy’s stern-faced, Marlon Brando in The Wild Ones-type leader and Butler’s brooding, James Dean-esque loner.
Based on Danny Lyon’s photographs of a motorcycle club in the 1960s, The Bikeriders is loyal to its period details and bringing those pictures to life. Jeff Nichols, who’s directed a number of great movies over the years including Take Shelter, Mud, Loving and Midnight Special, takes his viewers to another time and place in American history to explore something deeper about us and our culture.”
