Wes Anderson Abroad

May 31–June 5, 2025

“For the first decade of his career, Wes Anderson specialized in American milieu, locating his first two features in and around his hometown of Houston, Texas, before shifting to the Northeast for his breakthrough family epic, The Royal Tenenbaums. But over the last two decades, much of his work has ventured further afield, from coastal Italia (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) to the railways of India (The Darjeeling Limited), the German Alps (The Grand Budapest Hotel), and semi-imaginary Paris (The French Dispatch). In anticipation of his latest foreign dispatch (The Phoenician Scheme), in which the likes of Benicio del Toro, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks bring us back to Germany, the JBFC takes a tour through these previous journeys abroad, in which the American auteur exults in the unfamiliar while unfailingly—and knowingly—carrying along his own distinctively Yankee sensibility.”
