Walking Out

Q&A filmmaker Alex Smith and editor Michael Taylor

A Sundance Film Festival favorite, this engrossing tale of wilderness survival was shot entirely on location during Montana’s breathtaking and brutal winter. An intimate, gripping coming-of-age narrative that lays bare the challenges of life in this landscape, it’s the story of reluctant teenager David (Josh Wiggins), who is visiting his father (Matt Bomer) for their annual hunting trip. David begins to understand and appreciate the ritual of the hunt, but things go awry and the father-son bonding trip turns into a matter of life and death. Full of stunning widescreen vistas and wildlife shots, Walking Out is an emotional and resonant family story that challenges our assumptions about living responsibly in nature.
