Harkening back to his breakthrough film Slacker and transcending the boundaries of technology and imagination, Richard Linklater’s Waking Life is a philosophical, revolutionary breakthrough in film animation. Linklater’s first film to utilize the rotoscope animation style later seen in his films A Scanner Darkly and Apollo 10 ½, Waking Life follows its unnamed protagonist, played by Dazed and Confused actor Wiley Wiggins, as he wanders through a series of encounters in a version of Austin, TX that may or may not be reality. It is this surreal journey, latent with endless ideas and possibilities, which ultimately leads to the film’s fundamental question: are we sleep-walking through our waking state or wake-walking through our dreams?
In celebration of the JBFC’s 25th Anniversary, these screenings will feature our original 2001 pricing.
