Trainspotting: 30th Anniversary

New 4K Restoration playing June 5 & 6

A seminal classic from Academy Award winner Danny Boyle (28 Days Later), this unforgettable adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s eponymous novel stars Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald.

Set in the gritty underbelly of Edinburgh, Trainspotting is the story of Mark Renton (McGregor) and his so-called friends—an eccentric gang of losers, liars, psychos, thieves, and junkies. As hilarious as it is harrowing, the film charts the disintegration of the group’s friendship as they proceed, with reckless abandon, down a path of seemingly guaranteed self-destruction. Mark alone has the insight and opportunity to “choose life” and escape his fate, but, then again, does he even want to?

Supervised and approved by director Danny Boyle, this 4K digital restoration was undertaken by the Criterion Collection from a scan of the 35mm original negative. The 5.1 surround soundtrack was remastered from the original six-track magnetic masters by Ted Hall at Pacific Ocean Post in Santa Monica, California, in 1997.

"Trainspotting is supercharged with sulphurous humour and brutal recklessness: it charges at you like Ewan McGregor's Renton sprinting from store detectives in the opening sequence."
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"A cocktail of scuzzy charm, nerve and despair that seduces and repulses in nearly equal proportions. It packs a jolt, all right. But it leaves you with a brutal hangover, too."
Hal Hinson, Washington Post
