The Lunchbox

Followed by a tasting reception in the Jane Peck Gallery

Our popular Film to Table series continues with the sumptuous Indian food film The Lunchbox! Lonely housewife Ila (Nimrat Kaur) decides to try adding some spice to her stale marriage by preparing a special lunch for her neglectful husband. But when the delivery goes awry, Ila’s thoughtfully-prepared meal winds up in the hands of Saajan (Irrfan Khan), an irritable widower. Curious about her husband’s lack of response, Ila adds a note to the next day’s lunchbox, unwittingly beginning an unusual friendship in which Saajan and Ila can talk about their joys and sorrows without ever meeting in person.

Afterwards, join us upstairs in the Jane Peck Gallery to enjoy a delectable tasting menu, presented in partnership with Fatt Root and Pubstreet.

"The Lunchbox is a first feature for director Ritesh Batra, but it nicely captures the almost overwhelming crush and noise of contemporary India, and it plays cleverly and delicately with the tension of whether its two correspondents might eventually meet. Theirs is one "virtual" romance that has nothing to do with social media."
Bob Mondello, NPR
"The debut creation of director Ritesh Batra, it’s a lovely little film from a place where the little things linger."
Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
