The Girl Can't Help It

Introduction by WFUV DJ Eric Holland

As one of the first Rock ‘n’ Roll movies of its time, Frank Tashlin’s The Girl Can’t Help It is a romantic farce about showbiz with a seriously great soundtrack that features the talents of many of rock’s earliest pioneers.

Filmed in Cinemascope, the musical follows down-and-out agent Tom Miller (Tom Ewell), who’s tasked with making a gangster’s girlfriend, Jerri Jordan (Jayne Mansfield), into a star. Instead, he finds himself falling in love with her. Features appearances and music by artists like Little Richard, Fats Domino, Julie London, The Platters, Gene Vincent, Ray Anthony, Eddie Cochran, Abbey Lincoln, and more.

"Tashlin demonstrated an innate knowledge of the capacties offered by the Cinescope canvas."
Marjorie Baumgarte, Austin Chronicle
“Tashlin's savage lampoon of American notions of success and fulfillment is hilarious and genuinely appealing.”
Don Druker, Chicago Reader

This film is part of the Sounds of Summer series.
