In his first feature film lead role, Ron “Ronny” Howard, already known for his role as Opie in The Andy Griffith Show, stars as Eddie Corbett, the young son of widowed radio station executive Tom (Glenn Ford). After the death of his mother, Eddie is still grieving, but Tom is ready to re-enter the dating market. As his father navigates the affections of a handful of potential suitors, Eddie must adjust to these sudden changes. Directed by Hollywood legend Vincente Minnelli (Meet Me in St. Louis), this MGM romantic comedy balances the turbulent emotions of a family recovering from loss with playfulness, humor, and grace. It was adapted at the end of the decade into a popular television sitcom starring Bill Bixby.

"[An] excellent seriocomedy... there's little about this film that doesn't work."
"In The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Howard gave what is considered by many to be one of the great performances by a child actor, playing his comic scenes with a deadpan gravity, and his dramatic scenes with vivid intensity."
This film is part of the Ron Howard Retrospective series.
