Sam Peckinpah’s revisionist western Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid may seem an odd fit for Bob Dylan to make his narrative feature debut, but the singer exceeds expectations with both a scene-stealing performance and an unforgettable soundtrack that includes his hit “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”  The movie follows two former associates, outlaw-turned-sheriff Pat Garrett (James Coburn) and famous outlaw Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson), now on opposite sides as reluctant enemies. Featuring a large cast including Jason Robards, Katy Jurado, Emilio Fernández, Harry Dean Stanton, and Slim Pickens, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid was one of the last westerns from the director who helped revitalize the genre.
