Melville: An Introduction

Join JBFC Senior Film Programmer Andrew Jupin for a crash course in all things Melville! With several masterpieces in his modest body of work—he directed only 13 films in his much-too-brief life—Jean-Pierre Melville is still not a household name to American audiences, a major oversight. Melville nearly singlehandedly reinvented the crime genre, demonstrating how gangster movies can not only thrill and entertain, but also be gorgeous, elegant, precise works of art. Never one to shy away from politics, Melville also directed unforgettable works dealing with the French Resistance, including arguably his best film, Army of Shadows. This evening’s introductory lecture will feature clips, trailers, and even a few surprises.
