In this adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic coming of age novel the March sisters Jo (Winona Ryder), Meg (Trini Alvarado), Beth (Claire Danes) and Amy (Kristen Dunst and Samantha Mathis) grow up under the care of their loving mother (Susan Sarandon) against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Each girl’s conflicting personalities cause them to squabble like all sisters do, but their familial bond stays strong despite the many kinds of heartbreak they encounter throughout their formative years. As the March sisters age into their adult selves the family both struggles and evolves when male suitors, including the young neighbor who grew up alongside them (Christian Bale), seek to court the increasingly independent young women.
