In 2012, as vice president of Jobbik, Hungary’s extreme far-right party, Csanad Szegedi regularly espoused anti-Semitic rhetoric and Holocaust denials. He was a founder of the Hungarian Guard, a now-banned militia inspired by the Arrow Cross, a pro-Nazi party complicit in the murder of thousands of Jews during World War II. Then came a revelation that upended his life: Szegedi learned not only that his maternal grandparents were Jewish, but that his beloved grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor who had hidden her faith, fearing further persecution. What ensues is a radical shift in Szegedi’s life, as he confronts the painful truths of his family’s past, his own wrongdoing, and the turbulent history of his country. But is his astonishing transformation genuine? Or is he simply a desperate man who has nowhere else to turn?
