Harmonia—“as grounded in the heat and dust of its backstage milieu as an Altman film, and as infatuated with classical music as Ulmer’s Carnegie Hall” (Slant)—is a music-filled contemporary take on the biblical story of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Ismael, and Yitzhak. Sarah is the Jerusalem Philharmonic’s harpist; Abraham, her husband, is its almighty conductor. The two are desperate to have a child, but all attempts end in despair, disrupting the already fragile balance of their marriage. Hagar, a young Arab horn player from East Jerusalem, enters the scene, and she and Sarah immediately form an unusually intimate relationship.
