Legendary musician David Byrne of the Talking Heads wanted to bring color guards, which he refers to as “a sophisticated folk art form that flies under the official cultural radar,” onto a bigger stage. So in the summer of 2015, he staged a brilliant, collaborative showcase at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center to celebrate the passion and creativity of these young performers. The crème de la crème of the flag-flipping, saber-spinning, sequin-studded “sport of the arts” took their synchronized dance routines to the floor, choreographed to live performances of original music by Lucius, Nelly Furtado, Ira Glass, and Byrne himself. Dazzingly shot by “a talent-rich gang of cinematographers” (The Hollywood Reporter), Contemporary Color is a surprising, and even moving, encapsulation of a one-of-a-kind live event.
