Breaking a Monster chronicles Unlocking the Truth’s break-out year, following the 13-year-old band members as they move out of childhood to reckon with their rock-star dreams. Found playing heavy metal on NYC streets, the young African American musicians became a YouTube sensation. And then 70-year-old Hollywood producer Alan Sacks, one of the forces behind the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato, took them under his wing, dragging them to endless meetings in his attempt to remake them into teen-friendly pop stars. Appearing at Coachella and SXSW, signing a million-dollar deal with a major label, mapping out the future of their band—it’s challenging for any musician, let alone this bunch of funny, charismatic adolescents who only want to play music.
