Bound for Glory

Presented on 35mm

In director Hal Ashby’s (Harold and Maude) stunning portrait of folk singer Woody Guthrie, David Carradine gives a career-best performance as the hard-travelin’, ramblin’ balladeer who sang of America’s sorrows and joys during the Great Depression, instilling hope in the hearts of downtrodden Americans everywhere. Featuring Academy Award-winning cinematography from legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler (The Conversation), Bound for Glory marked the first ever use of the Steadicam, a then-revolutionary camera stabilizing mount invented and operated by Garrett Brown, which forever changed how films could and would be shot.

"An absorbing and impressive piece of work."
Pauline Kael, The New Yorker
"One of the best-looking films ever made, in its photography, in its use of locations, in its recreation of the America that Woody Guthrie discovered."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

This film is part of the Sounds of Summer series.
