A Raisin in the Sun

Reel Talk with Mia Mask

In honor of MLK Day, please join us for a screening of this timeless classic. Featuring star-making performances from the entire cast, including Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, and Louis Gossett Jr., A Raisin in the Sun is the story of one black family’s desperate pursuit of the American dream. We follow the trials and tribulations of the Younger clan, an extended family sharing a small apartment in Chicago. Following the death of her husband, matriarch Lena “mama” Younger nervously anticipates the arrival of his life insurance check, hoping to use the money to purchase a home for herself and her family. Tension arises when she learns that her children, son Walter (Sidney Poitier) and daughter Beneatha (Diana Sands), have vastly different ideas about how the money should be spent. Adapted by Lorraine Hansberry from her own Pulitzer prize-winning play, Daniel Petrie’s film retains the restlessness and razor-sharp intensity of its source material and continues to inspire audiences, more than 50 years after its premiere.
