Remembering Ronit Elkabetz (1964–2016)
Known worldwide for her acclaimed acting performances (Or: My Treasure, Late Marriage, The Band’s Visit, and many more), Ronit Elkabetz was also a talented writer and director who collaborated with her brother Shlomi on a trilogy of unforgettable films: To Take a Wife, 7 Days, and Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem. While these films can be viewed as a trilogy, each film stands on its own as an intense and masterful work of dramatic fiction.
7 Days
When we revisit Viviane, 12 years have passed. It is now 1991, and Israel is in the midst of the first Gulf War, under daily missile attacks. Sadly, Viviane’s beloved brother, Maurice, one of her eight siblings, has suddenly died, and the clan gathers to mourn. During the traditional seven-day shiva period, no one is allowed to leave the house, and old jealousies, gossip, and rivalries come to the fore as the siblings face their unfulfilled ambitions. The superb ensemble cast is masterfully directed by Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz. A pick for Critics Week—Cannes Film Festival.
