Two American Families: 1991-2024, a special, two-hour documentary filmed over more than 30 years, is a portrait of perseverance from FRONTLINE, Bill Moyers, and filmmakers Tom Casciato and Kathleen Hughes that raises unsettling questions about the changing nature of the American economy and the impact on people struggling to make a living.

Note: Buses must arrive at the JBFC Theater by 9:15 AM. The JBFC will cover the cost of up to TWO buses for under-resourced schools. Bus availability is on a first-come, first-served basis. All bus invoices must be sent to JBFC within 60 days after the event in order to be paid. This event will be photographed. Prior to the event, educators will be asked to return photo releases for all students attending.

 

Special Guest: Tom Casciato, Director and Producer of Two American Families: 1991-2024

Tom Casciato is an Emmy award-winning director, writer, producer and television executive who has created critically acclaimed nonfiction projects that have appeared on PBS, ABC, NBC, TBS, Showtime and more. He recently directed and produced two stories within episodes of the second season of the Emmy Award-winning climate-change series, “Years Of Living Dangerously.” His 2013 film with Kathleen Hughes and Bill Moyers for Frontline series, “Two American Families,” was called by Salon “… one of the best and most heartbreaking documentaries” of the year. Tom previously worked at WNET from 2006 until 2012, serving variously as director of News & Current Affairs and executive producer of two PBS series, “Wide Angle” and “Exposé: America’s Investigative Reports.”

 

Special Guest: Kathleen Hughes, Director, Producer, and Writer of Two American Families: 1991-2024

Kathleen Hughes is a producer and director of PBS Frontline’s Two American Families. A two hour documentary that took place over 30 years about two Milwaukee families, one Black, the Stanleys, and one white, the Neumanns — who battle to stay out of poverty. Before that Kathleen most recently directed and produced the 2022 Sundance Film Festival documentary The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales.
