SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION

Through screenings, workshops, and deep filmmaking experiences, the Jacob Burns Film Center empowers students to become discerning viewers, skilled storytellers, and socially conscious citizens.
Each year, more than 5,000 students engage in our innovative programs. Over 70% of these students come from under-resourced schools and participate free of charge, including transportation to and from the JBFC campus. In addition, we offer after-school courses, summer camp, family programs, and continuing education opportunities. Intensive fellowships for 10th and 11th grade students are available through our Director’s Cut High School Fellowship program, a collaboration with NYU Tisch School of the Arts and Imagine Entertainment.
“Through the JBFC’s curriculum, students learn the craft of visual storytelling as they develop the skills to navigate the rapidly changing and challenging needs of the 21st century.”
—Tara O’Gorman, Casimir Pulaski School teacher, Yonkers
MEET DETROIT HAMELL
JBFC Educator & Alum
Detroit Hamell began his journey with the JBFC in the 4th grade. Every summer camp and after-school program he attended fueled his passion for filmmaking. In 2018, Detroit progressed from a JBFC student to an educator, inspiring young students to explore the fundamentals and joys of filmmaking at our Media Arts Lab. Most recently, Detroit taught Frame by Frame: Coming of Age in America, a cinematic journey through the trials, triumphs, and transformations of growing up. His next course will explore film through the lens of horror.
MEET NANCY WOOLF
JBFC Educator
Nancy Woolf has been a JBFC Educator for over ten years. She currently teaches our third grade program, What’s The Story? During three visits to the Media Arts Lab, students analyze inspiring short films, create detailed storyboards, and share back their wild, creative ideas with a supportive group of peers. Plus, they have an absolute blast doing it! Nancy received her BA from Dartmouth College and her MA in Childhood Education from Manhattanville College.
Help us continue to connect our vibrant community.
