Bequests & Planned Gifts

Adding a simple bequest to your will is an easy way to contribute to the enduring success of the Jacob Burns Film Center. An unrestricted bequest provides the JBFC with the flexibility to use your gift to meet programmatic and financial needs. However, we would be happy to apply your bequest to a specific fund. A bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes and bequests are generally not subject to state and inheritance taxes.

Sample bequest language:
“I give, devise and bequeath to the Jacob Burns Film Center, federal tax ID number 13-4038441, 405 Manville Road, Pleasantville, NY 10570, ____% of my residuary estate (or $____) to be used for its general purposes.”

Donors who choose to make the Film Center a part of their estate plans can realize financial and/or tax saving benefits. Please speak with a financial advisor or attorney about what makes sense for you. We welcome the opportunity to provide you with individual assistance and information, in confidence and without obligation.

To request more information or to talk about a bequest, please contact Judy Exton, Director of Development, at 914.773.7663, ext. 414, or jexton@burnsfilmcenter.org

Additional Planned Giving Opportunities

Do you have an IRA, 401(k), life-insurance policy, or any other assets not included in your will? If so, these are called non-probate assets and you must plan your beneficiaries for them separately.

Gifts From Your IRA
If you are 70 1/2 or older, you are eligible to make tax-free contributions to the Jacob Burns Film Center from your IRA or other qualified retirement plan. One of the key benefits is that the donation counts towards your Required Minimum Distribution or RMD (the IRS-determined minimum amount you must withdraw from your account each year).

Charitable Gift Annuity
A gift annuity is an agreement between you and the Jacob Burns Film Center under which you give a specific sum of cash or securities or other property and, in return, are guaranteed a fixed annual income for life. The transfer is part gift and part purchase of an annuity.

Charitable Remainder / Lead Trusts
A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) is created by a transfer of assets to a trust that will pay you or another beneficiary income for life or for a period of years. At the death of the last beneficiary, the remaining property in the trust passes to the Jacob Burns Film Center.

A Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) is created by a transfer of assets to a trust that will pay the Jacob Burns Film Center income for a term of years. At the end of the term, you or a beneficiary receives the remaining trust assets. A CLT can be created during life or at death (under the terms of your will). This planned giving option is a great way to transfer assets to future generations while benefiting the Jacob Burns Film Center today. The tax advantage is that it removes assets from your estate and minimizes your estate and gift taxes.

Life Insurance
Donate a paid-up life insurance policy which has outlived its original purpose, and receive a current tax deduction.

Real Estate
Donate appreciated real estate that is not subject to a lien or mortgage.
