Shirley MacLaine: Make 'em Laugh, Make 'em Cry
Aug. 14–Nov. 6, 2024
A legendary performer with a singular gift for melding comedy with tragedy, Shirley MacLaine rightfully stands as one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation.
Beginning her career as a Broadway dancer before making her on-screen debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry, MacLaine has gone on to star in over 60 films — receiving a Kennedy Center Honor and winning an Oscar, an Emmy, and six Golden Globes in the process.
In the words of MacLaine’s Postcards from the Edge co-star Meryl Streep: “Some performers are absolutely indelible. We fall early and we fall hard for them, and we follow them for the rest of their lives. That’s our Shirl.”
The Jacob Burns Film Center is excited to highlight four of Shirley MacLaine’s finest performances, with screenings of Billy Wilder’s The Apartment (on 35mm), Bob Fosse’s Sweet Charity (Roadshow Version), James L. Brooks’ Terms of Endearment, and Mike Nichols’ Postcards from the Edge (on 35mm).
