Retro Revival–Fall 2016

By JBFC Marketing Volunteer Dotty Battel

As you may recall, we introduced this on-going series over the summer. It is our salute to the world of retrospective cinema, and hopefully you had a chance to catch one or two screenings. Thanks to the dedication of film preservationists who have become, according to New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis “the celluloid heroes of today,” we are able to share with our audience some great classics in their gorgeous remastered or restored version. Here’s what you can look forward to in September:

Howards End
September 9-15
The team of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory have adapted this classic 1910 novel by E. M. Forster into “a feast for the eyes as well as the soul.” (People).  With its overarching theme of “only connect,” the film is a biting social critique about class warfare, injustice, and the destructive nature of the rigid rituals of Edwardian England. And then, of course, there’s the amazing cast, including Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Helena Bonham Carter. See for yourself, but before you do, watch this “behind the scenes” video:

Dekalog
Sept 23-29
Eminent director Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Dekalog was first shown as 10 television dramas on Polish TV in 1988-89, each based on one of the Ten Commandments. It was first shown at the Burns in 2001 as a 10-part marathon and we’re excited to bring it back in a newly restored re-release. Kieślowski is a storytelling genius and the film is a testament to human longing, pain, love, and the consequences of the choices we make. It “stands as a masterwork of modern cinema, essential viewing for anyone who cares about the movies as a serious art form.” (Stephen Holden, The New York Times). Watch this interview with Kieślowski to learn more about what he was trying to convey:

We will be screening this work 2 episodes at a time (listed as A, B, C, D, and E on our website) so make your plans now to spend the week at the JBFC!
