Elements of Film: Independents Day

Elements of Film: Independents Day

In the spirit of our national holiday, we’ll explore what makes a film independent and some of the American independent filmmakers you should know about —Jim Jarmusch, Todd Haynes, Barry Jenkins- and others. View clips from films that dared to tackle material that the big studios wouldn’t touch— from interracial dating in Jon Cassavetes’ 1959 Shadows, to voyeurism and secrecy in Steve Soderberg’s 1989 Sex, Lies, and Videotape, through to homelessness in Debra Granik’s 2018 Leave No Trace. You’ll learn how independent filmmakers have opened up space to tell a fuller American story.

This program will take place at the JBFC Theater.
