Brooklyn: A Tale of Two Countries

By Stacy Zakalik, Marketing Intern

Brooklyn2Brooklyn, a new drama directed by John Crowley (Boy A, Intermission), opening at the Burns Friday, November 13, tells the story of a young woman torn between two men and two countries.

Based on the best-selling novel by Colm Toibin, Saoirse Ronan stars as the main character, Eilis, a young woman living and working in Ireland in the 1950’s who takes a chance and moves Brooklyn to start a new life. While in this new vibrant city, Eilis meets a cast of interesting characters: a group of fellow girls at her boardinghouse; Mrs. Keough (Julie Walters), the strict mother hen and owner of the boardinghouse; an old priest (Jim Broadbent) she befriends; and, most importantly, a young Italian boy, Tony (Emory Cohen).

During her stay, Eilis takes it upon herself to learn bookkeeping and accounting, to become a better and more industrious employee. Yet, even more importantly, she falls in love with Tony, who falls for her as well. They learn about the other’s culture in the short time they get to know one another.

Jim Farrell (Domhnall Gleeson) stars as Eilis’ other suitor, living back home in Ireland, who steals her heart as well, though in a different way.
