Campy, Cheezy….and Highly Entertaining!

This is a post by JBFC Volunteer Dotty Battel

theoscarAs TimeOut put it, The Oscar is a “tacky Tinseltown soaper…featuring numerous stellar walk-ons and dreadful dialogue,” and that about sums up Jonathan Demme’s latest selection for his “Rarely Seen Cinema“ series.  “It never ceases to amaze me how deeply fun and gratifying this inarguably “bad” movie can be,” says Demme.

Here’s the plot: Frankie Fane (Stephen Boyd), a vicious, first class heel, claws his way to stardom in Hollywood, betraying everyone along the way. Released in 1966, the film is a quintessential product of the era (check out those hairstyles and Edith Head costumes), with the most amazing cast, including Elke Sommer, Jill St. John, Eleanor Parker, Ed Begley, Milton Berle, Joseph Cotten to name just a few of the “almost A-List” crowd.

So join Demme on Sunday, February 15 at 5:00 pm, one week before this year’s Oscar ceremony! The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Jonathan Demme. To put you in the mood, watch this clip…..I challenge you not to laugh out loud!
