Wings of Desire marked a homecoming of sorts for Wenders as it was his first film made in Germany after eight years working in America. The main characters are guardian angels—benevolent, invisible beings in trench coats—who listen to the thoughts of mortals and attempt to comfort and guide them. One of them, Damiel (Bruno Ganz, The American Friend), wishes to become human after he falls in love with the beautiful trapeze artist Marion (Solveig Dommartin, Until the End of the World). Peter Falk (Mikey and Nicky), playing himself, helps Damiel during his transformation by introducing him to life’s little pleasures. Much like Paris, Texas, the film has achieved cult status around the world; in 1998, it was unfortunately remade under the title City of Angels, with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan in the lead roles.
