Presented with 1976 Short Film Eva's Man—Pre-recorded introduction by Series Curator Tayler Montague

Presented on 35mm

Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett star in this funny and touching film about four women who find strength through their rare and special relationship. Savannah, Bernadine, Robin and Gloria are all searching for the Real Thing: true love. Bernadine thought she had it, until her husband left her for another woman, Savannah and Robin are successful in business, but their love lives are bankrupt. And divorcee Gloria is getting back in the game by flirting with her new, very eligible neighbor. Based on Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel.

Preceded by the rarely screened 1976 short film Eva’s Man.

Eva’s Man:

1976. 12 min. Anita W. Addison. US. NR.

A short film based on the novel of the same name by black woman novelist Gayl Jones. The film focuses on Eva; a woman being questioned by a psychiatrist after being accused of murdering her lover. Using a tape recorder, Eva recounts stories of abuse and disrespect at the hands of men in her life. Contains depictions of sexual violence.

"McMillan and [screenwriter] Bass have retained the book’s bawdy humor and joyful air of just-between-us-girls conspiracy."
Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly
"Waiting to Exhale has glossy production values befitting this glamorous female ensemble... Whitaker’s direction is sensual and buttery smooth."
Albert Yanney, British Film Institute
