Totonel is 10 years old and lives with his two teenage sisters, each struggling to survive on their own and hoping that the family will be reunited when their mother returns from prison. Shot over several years, with astonishing access to its subjects, this impressive documentary works almost like a fiction film. It may be shocking, given the brutal scenes involving drug addicts, but what matters most in this tough social commentary directed by Emmy Award winner Alexander Nanau (The World According to Ion B.) is the way Toto manages to stay pure and find his way in a cruel environment.
