The angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by this dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by Nino Castelnuovo. When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through lilting songs by the great composer Michel Legrand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.
In our ongoing effort to spotlight recent film restorations, the Jacob Burns Film Center is proud to present the new 4K restoration of the beloved French musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg for a limited run. The new restoration was overseen by director Jacques Demy’s children Mathieu Demy and Rosalie Varda-Demy and played at the Cannes Film Festival in honor of the film’s 60th anniversary. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg originally played at the festival’s 17th edition and won the prestigious Palme d’or in 1964. The new restoration used the original film negative and a three-track mix of music and vocals.
