Two decades years after filming his twenty-something friends on a free-spirited tour down the Colorado River, Robb Moss revisits some of the same people as they navigate very different tributaries in their 40s. From marriage to divorce, parenthood, health crises, career ambitions, reinventions and retrenchments, we witness a spectrum of life—at a particular time of life—scarcely ever captured on film. In collaboration with legendary editor Karen Schmeer (The Fog of War), Moss incorporates footage from his 16mm short Riverdogs (screening on Nov. 9), cutting between edenic shots of young bodies in motion and SD video scenes of their middle-aged selves packing school lunches and commuting to work. The Same River Twice was the second in an unplanned trilogy (and the first feature) featuring the same cohort of uncommonly candid and unfailingly engaging subjects, trailed two decades later by Moss’s latest, The Bend in the River (screening on Nov. 8).
