The Man in the Basement

From the prominent French director of Bicycling with Molière, Philippe Le Guay’s newest is a tense psychological thriller. A young Jewish Parisian couple, played by Jérémie Renier (Saint Laurent) and Bérénice Bejo (The Artist, A Knight’s Tale), sell the basement of their apartment to an older, needy, but seemingly well-mannered teacher, Jacques Fonzic (François Cluzet, The Intouchables). When it turns out that Fonzic is an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist, they attempt to cancel the sale—as Fonzic befriends their naive teenage daughter and turns the family’s world upside down. Provocative and superbly acted, the film—based on a true story—will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This film is part of the Jewish Film Festival 2022 series.
