Wallace Worsley’s Hollywood adaptation of Victor Hugo’s legendary novel stars Lon Chaney as Quasimodo, one of the great tragic heroes of silent cinema: a socially ostracized hunchbacked bellringer who lives in the tower of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Sharing many similarities to Lon Chaney’s future role as the titular Phantom of the Opera in 1925, Quasimodo watches a lovely young woman from afar: Esmerelda, the daughter of an influential Roma leader. When various forces such as Quasimodo’s villainous master and an ambitious young guard captain seek to claim Esmeralda, the lovestruck Quasimodo emerges from his hiding in an attempt to rescue her.
