The Garden of the Finzi-Continis

We are thrilled that this exquisite, beloved Best Foreign Film Oscar winner is available in the US again—in a beautifully restored version. Vittorio De Sica’s (Bicycle Thieves) seemingly straightforward narrative tells the story of the romances and class conflicts of a group of well-off Jews in Fascist-era Italy. With magnificent performances from Helmut Berger and Dominique Sanda, it’s a richly atmospheric evocation of a time and place. As anti-Semitism rises, a family sequesters themselves in their idyllic home and garden with the attitude of “If it doesn’t affect us directly, say nothing”—and the walls come crumbling down.

“De Sica’s film creates a feeling of nostalgia for a lost time and place, but it isn't the nostalgia of looking back. It's the nostalgia of the time itself, when people still inhabiting their world could sense it slipping away, and already missed what they had not yet lost.”
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
