The Dark Knight

Presented on 35mm

The rare sequel to transcend its predecessor, the second film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy finds Batman (Christian Bale) facing off against the Joker (Heath Ledger—in an Academy Award winning performance for the ages) while Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and ambitious new district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) set out to liberate Gotham City from the clutches of organized crime. As the Joker throws Gotham further and further into anarchy, he forces Batman ever closer to crossing the thin line between hero and vigilante.

"Among the great strengths of The Dark Knight is the way it combines hardboiled naturalism with the kind of stunts and setpieces you expect in summer blockbusters."
Geoffrey Macnab, Independent (UK)
"With The Dark Knight, the cinematic superhero spectacle comes closest to becoming modern myth, a pulp tragedy with costumed players and elevated stakes and terrible sacrifices. It's the new gold standard for superhero noir."
Sean Axmaker, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

This film is part of the The New Classics series.
