The Color Purple

Presented on 35mm—Pre-recorded introduction by Series Curator Tayler Montague

Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey star in director Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple. From 1909 to 1949, Celie (Goldberg, Ghosts of Mississippi), a Southern Black woman, gradually gains self-respect as she strives to educate herself and to find lovedespite an abusive spouse and a society biased against her race and her sex.

The Color Purple screens as part of our REMIX tribute to Quincy Jones. Jones was involved with The Color Purple as both a producer and composer. He had an active role in the casting process, including that of Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. Jones was nominated for both Best Original Song and Best Original Score with his team of collaborators, which constituted two of the film’s 11 nominations at the 1986 Oscars. Revisit further selections from Quincy Jones’ film career with our screenings of The Wiz and The Getaway.

"It is a great, warm, hard, unforgiving, triumphant movie, and there is not a scene that does not shine with the love of the people who made it."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
