A slick WWII naval officer, Lt. Commander Charles Edward Madison (James Garner, The Great Escape) knows all the angles. He thinks he knows everything about women, too—until he meets Emily (Julie Andrews, The Sound of Music). Paddy Chayefsky (Network) loosely adapted this romantic early anti-war black comedy from William Bradford Huie’s novel of the same name. The film also features memorable supporting performances from Melvyn Douglas (The Changeling) and James Coburn (The Magnificent Seven), under the direction of Arthur Hiller (The In-Laws, Love Story).
