Soul Power

15th anniversary screening

Originally organized as part of the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, this multi-day music festival brought together some of the best Black musicians from the U.S. to Zaire for an unforgettable concert series. Guests included B.B. King, The Spinners, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco and the Fania All-Stars, African artists like Miriam Makeba, and none other than the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, to close out the show with a funky performance. Soul Power collects highlights from numerous performances and backstage moments before, during, and after the show for a thrilling recap of a once-in-lifetime show.

Presented on 35mm.

Soul Power turns out to be an unusually resonant time capsule, one that weaves together theatrics, musicianship, cosmopolitanism and sharp political critique in a vibrant look-back that's at once celebratory and wistful.”
Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
“A non-stop head-bobbing knee-bouncer.”
James Adams, Globe and Mail

This film is part of the Sounds of Summer series.
