Before The Resurrection at Webster Hall, their musical rebirth with American Dream, the 10-night residency at Brooklyn Steel, and the fabulous collection Electric Lady Sessions, LCD Soundsystem played their “final” show in 2011 at Madison Square Garden. Frontman James Murphy had made the decision to dissolve LCD at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that it would go out with the most ambitious concert of its career. The nearly four-hour extravaganza did just that, with New York magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and Time lamenting that “we may never dance again.” This documentary is simultaneously a record of that once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of Murphy as he navigates both the personal and professional ramifications of his decision. Nearly a decade after this film’s release, and with the band still here (for now), looking back at LCD’s very loud “ending” is way more fun and a lot less bittersweet.
