Our third and final shorts package focuses on four short narratives Varda directed between ’58 and ’84. Featured here are: L’Opera Mouffe (1958, 16 m.), an experimental piece she produced while pregnant that captures her immediate surroundings while showcasing her unconventional and freestyle approach to filmmaking; Les Fiancés du Pont Macdonald (1961, 5 m.), an amusing short Varda made for Cléo from 5 to 7 that’s a silent film parody featuring her New Wave colleagues Jean-Luc Godard and the late Anna Karina; Documenteur (1981, 65 m.), a small drama about a mother and child (played by Varda’s actual son, Mathieu Demy) trying to quietly survive on the outskirts of Los Angeles, and a great companion piece to Mur Murs, a feature-length documentary playing on Feb. 8 and March 4; and finally, 7 P., cuis., s.de b… à saisir (1984, 27 m.)—whose title is an abbreviated real estate listing—an experimental narrative that finds Varda playing with space and time inside a house that has seen several occupants over the years and is probably the closest she ever came to directing a horror film.
