This shorts package contains another four documentaries by Varda, produced between ’66 and ’93, all centered on friends, colleagues, kindred spirits, and family members. Featured here are Elsa La Rose (1966, 20 m.), a celebration of the life and love of French writers Elsa Triolet and Louis Aragon; Uncle Yanco (1967, 20 m.), Varda’s first “California” film, in which she tracks down—and finds a common bond with—a distant relative she’s never met; Ulysse (1983, 21 m.), where Varda reminisces about, and revisits the subjects of, a photograph she took three decades prior; and The Young Girls Turn 25 (1993, 67 m.), the longest of the program, which captures the enthusiasm and excitement surrounding the 25th anniversary of her late husband Jacques Demy’s masterpiece The Young Girls of Rochefort.
