Run of the Arrow

Q&A Kandia Crazy Horse

Starring Rod Steiger, Brian Keith, Ralph Meeker, and a young Charles Bronson, Run of the Arrow is about a Confederate soldier (Steiger) who refuses to surrender and accept defeat at the end of the Civil War. Instead, he renounces everything, travels west, and joins the Sioux tribe. Later, he is forced to pick sides when the US Army builds a fort nearby and fighting breaks out between the Army and the Sioux. A fascinating, complex study of national and personal identity.

Preceded by Jonathan Demme’s Standing Rock short documentary, Protection Not Protest: The People of Standing Rock (22 min).

A standout in the crowded Americana field & burgeoning revival of Black Hillbilly, KANDIA CRAZY HORSE expresses an authentic and rich sonic vision of Appalachian (Affrilachian) lore & Native American twang. Born in the Nation’s Capital, Kandia has resided in Bamako, Maseru, Alexandria – Egypt, Accra, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Charlotte – North Carolina, near Branson – Missouri & is now based in Harlem. Her fusion of Blue Ridge mountain music & Laurel Canyon-influenced songwriting skills, voice infused with a honeyed rasp, and deft arrangements have yielded performances on the Grand Ole Echo @ SXSW and at Lincoln Center; garnering critical acclaim from outlets such as the Village VoiceAcoustic GuitarRelixHarp/Blurt, celebrated indie radio station WFMU & 4-stars from the UK’s MOJO. After recording her cosmic country & western albums Stampede and Canyons with the core of Shakira’s international studio & touring band, Kandia’s live act evolved into her current Native Americana trio, Cactus Rose, which navigates the music scene of New York City and enjoys bonds with Los Angeles psychedelic-country’s leading lights. Praised for her all-encompassing fluency and facility with varied country and folk music traditions, Kandia’s sound unifies the ancient with indigenous futures.

This film is part of the Saddle Up Saturdays with Jonathan Demme series.
