In this rich and incisive portrayal, Tibetan-American filmmaker Tenzin Phuntsog explores three paths of resistance against the Chinese occupation through the actions of members of three generations of exiled Tibetans: a former monk broke his vows and became a guerilla leader; Phuntsog’s own mother followed the Dalai Lama’s Middle Path and raised her family in America; and a young Tibetan man attempted to self-immolate. How does the filmmaker understand his place in the struggle? The tension between faith and ritual on the one hand and political reality on the other brings the teachings of Buddhism into our world in a new and robust way.
